We go about with our daily lives not understanding stress and tension deeply. Most of us know vaguely what these terms are and how they can affect our lives. We grew up with these factors weighing down on us whenever we are plucked out of our comfort zone and placed in a situation we have absolutely no control over. But this is the best time to really get down to the root of stress and tension to find out how we can improve the quality of our lives.
What is Stress?
Stress, according to several literatures, is our body’s internal way of reacting to certain events, demands and triggers. Usually, stress and tension go hand in hand. Whenever you are swamped with work, have to struggle to meet a deadline, inundated with problems or are experiencing any kind of dilemma that you have absolutely no control over, you feel this sort of negative feeling washing over you. Every muscle in your body feels tight. The back of your head may hurt. You might eventually lose your appetite. Worse, you might even lose your zest for life. Stress is like a sack of rice propped on your shoulders. It weighs you down and it prevents you from enjoying your life.
Scientifically, when there are certain untoward things happening in your life that you do not like or do not really have a good reaction to, your body will work in releasing certain chemicals and transport them into the blood. This is alternately called as “adrenaline” and may be ideal if you are exposed to danger. But if this is your body’s reaction to emotional stress, and you are not doing anything to release it, it can be harmful to your over-all health. So you see, stress is not completely harmful. It can be good depending on the “trigger”. It is also imperative to learn the causes of stress so you know what exactly you are dealing with.

Stress management is simply a set of steps and techniques that can help manage stress. This is what you need to keep the effects of stress under control so it will not affect your daily life.
Why is Stress Management Essential to our Daily Lives?
You have to admit that in this day and age, there are lots of stressors waiting to pounce on us. Even little things such as a slight drizzle can immediately cause stress to many people most likely because of previous bad experiences with flood and typhoons. Stress management is essential in order to sidestep the numerous bad effects of stress on our health.
Many people perceive stress as some sort of disease. If you look at its effects to our lives and our health, it can be thought of as a disease. But conditioning your mind to perceive stress as a disease is stressful in its own way.
Stress will always be a part of our lives. Even if you go out of your way to avoid stressors, there will always be times when you encounter situations that will cause problems to you. The key there is not to “cure” stress but to adapt to it and to lessen its aggravating effects. Stress may knock on your door but you can choose to keep that door locked. It is how you react to stress that is paramount.
What is Tension?
Tension is any kind of physical, emotional, mental or nervous strain. Was there ever a time when one or two areas of your body feel tight and crumpled up after a long day of dealing with stress? Body tension exists when opposite muscle groups are being contracted concurrently.
Physical, emotional, nervous and mental stressors tend to cause the muscles to flex involuntarily. When dealing with stress, it is not uncommon for a person to subconsciously brace his body up as defense against the stressors. This is why tension appears.

There are many ways to alleviate stress and tension. Having dealt with stress and tension for most of my life, I have found valuable ways that can help control them, keep them at bay and prevent them from affecting the quality of my life. These are the methods that I want to share to you.
